Topic: Willows Island Posted: 11 January 2006 at 11:37am |
There is a postcard on e-bay showing the church from Willows Island.
Does anyone know where Willows island is?

If that's the Misbourne, then I think that's somewhere behing the Poachers sort of area.
|
I used to be with it. But then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems scary and weird.

The postcard is for sale at around £24 although I think it will need a bid of £40+ to secure it. Nthemys has put in another bid over and above his current bid.

1915 - before the flats behind the Poachers were built and before Harwood Hutton and so on, so I think that's where it was taken from.

This willow island was situated behind the righthand side of the High Street. It formed a triangle with the River Misbourne surrounding it. Here, on the left, is one point of the triangle. On the rightof the river, by the hurdles, stood 'The Retreat'. The island measured about one acre and had willow trees growing in abundance. There was little open ground, but the flowers and birds made it a beautiful nature reserve. It was part of the Swan Farm grounds, quite near to the rickyard. Thanks to Mrs.Bonsey, who granted permissission for a plank to be placed over the narrow but quite deep river, access could be gained to the island and picnics were a joy there. now a block of flats and a large building for stores occupy the site. The parish Church can be seen in the distance.

I can see why the postcard is so valuable.
Well done Sid
